Today Hutch and I took a marvelous trip to the Etowah Indian Mounds. I had a lovely time with him and I learned a lot of fascinating history to boot. The State Park has a great museum, film, & very helpful rangers. We enjoyed it all as well as hiking.
The featured picture is an artist rendering of what it must have looked like during its heyday. Some of the very neat historical facts I learned about are:
The several thousand Native Americans who lived near Etowah had homes whose construction closely paralleled humble European homes of the same vintage. They were wattle and daub construction. We got to see some men making a home in that way at the Park today.
The Indian mounds and city were very like larger ones that have been excavated in South America.
One of my favorite things was seeing a river fish trap still in place from about 1,000 AD.
You can see some of the pictures from our trip by going to the icon to the right----
On the way home we stopped in several little towns and at one fruit and veggie market. I was looking for figs- but none were to be found. I'll keep looking.
Anyway, it was a very nice day and one that was quite cost effective as well. Hope your day was as nice.
